Yoyos, Cuffs, Brooches and Pretty Crafts

Friday, February 10th, 2012

The good news… I finally got my visa and now planning to go on a much wanted holiday soon!

Now, you’d think I can sit down and relax, but no because its time to get hubby’s visa application going. I’m so excited to see him after over a year!!!

On the crafty wifey side…

I found an old vintage-y piece of clothing that looks like it deserves to be thrown in the bin already, but the stingy, earth-saviour side of me would not allow it. So, I took a pair of scissors, a needle, a spool of thread, and got to work.

Sometime later…

(It’s supposed to be a cuff bracelet thingy that can fit almost all sizes of wrists.)

The white lace flowers are actually leftovers from my wedding gown, the tulle from my petticoat, and the blue-silver flower is a leftover ribbon from that which I mainly used on my wedding invites.

My crafty fingers just couldn’t stop creating something out of otherwise already useless stuff, like the denim pants I have which are still in good condition but couldn’t fit me anymore. So, it was off with the legs!

And poof!

Let’s see how it looks around my neck…

Yeah, that’s how you’d wear this pretty fabric necklace. With a plain collarless top!

Now, I’ll just make a couple more things and I can add a few things to my store soon.

Meanwhile, I did tell you, didn’t I? That I’m adding a couple of things to that pink yoyo necklace giveaway?

Yes! I finally found the time to take a photo of the add-ons in daylight. And here they are:

A lovely flower brooch made of felt (yes, made by myself) and a nice pink striped scarf/sash that you can wear as a belt, a head band, a neck scarf during the not-so-cold months, and even an embellishment for your purse!

With three pink girly goodies to possibly win, what are you waiting for? Join the giveaway now.

The Pink Yoyo Necklace…Giveaway (Ended)

Monday, January 30th, 2012

As I have announced on Facebook and Flickr, I have recently been watching yoyo crafts and amazed at how these little scraps of fabric can be turned into such beautiful items. Of course, I got inspired and was challenged… and soon came up with this:

I started with just that yoyo with the white lace at the center, but decided it looked rather lonely and lacking. So I went and added the two same-sized yoyos on each side. But still, I wasn’t contented. At last, I added the two small ones on each side, and all those pretty satin ribbon flowers.

‘Sigh!’   The result just made me want to go to Juniors’ Prom again. (Although I don’t think it’d go well with the dress I wore back then. Lol!)

As soon as I finished this, I decided I’d add this to my Madeit store and sell it for $18 maybe. But since Valentine’s is just around the corner, I reckoned I’d just give this away to one lucky reader of my blog ‘in the spirit of the season’.

From Ironing Board… To Dresser

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

When I moved into this room in a brand new house a little over a year ago, the only furniture there was in that room was a bed. I didn’t even buy it. It was given by someone who recently upgraded to a new bed. It was king sized, and though the only mattress I was able to get was a queen-sized one, I couldn’t complain. I was newly wed and was trying to save as much as I could with the little savings I had. I simply had to make do with what’s available in the mean time.

For me, it made no sense buying a handsome dresser for the bedroom. I was not willing to spend several hundreds of dollars for something that was not a desperate necessity. So I made do with a little shelf I made out of spare floor boards and an inexpensive mirror I bought from an Asian store. I did not even notice the weeks and months pass by.

Around the middle of the 2011, I thought I’d like to have my own iron and ironing board as well. I found an offer on gumtree.com.au, but was too late, as somebody had beaten me to it. Then came an offer on Freecycle… an ironing board being given away. Thinking (and hoping) that I’ll soon encounter another free iron offer, I contacted the Freecycler and was able to bring that free second-hand ironing board home with me. I was quite pleased with myself, and let the folded ironing board lean on the wall, just beside the bedroom closet, for a number of weeks, until I realized it was collecting dust. Red flag!

My gratitude goes to that someone online, which unluckily, I have forgotten, who shared about an ironing board turned into a hallway table or something. That woke me up and I realized, “Why, yeah, an ironing board isn’t just for ironing. It can be used as a table too!”

But I wanted a better dresser, so I thought I’d try to transform this ironing board, into a dresser.

Repurposing it was what kept me busy over the holidays, so I can say “Tah-dah!”, and show you photos of the results.

(Please forgive the wrinkled fabrics, though… I still don’t have an iron. LOL!!!)

The first thing I did was make a cover for the board. I used this lovely floral fabric, which I got from Salvo’s for around $5, I think. I placed the fabric upside-down on the board, pinned the fabric, and traced the board on the fabric with an ordinary pen. Then I added the band and the pleated mini-skirt, and was excited with the partial results.

Quite luckily, I’ve got this cream colored fabric with little brown dots in my stash. It’s another Salvo’s find. Since I’ve got a generous amount of that fabric, I used it to cover the legs of the ironing board. I also used it to dress up the floor-board shelf, which now house a few gadgets I often use, little fashion accessories (jewelry and hair accessories), a few cosmetics, and whatever else I feel like hiding in it when I’m being lazy.

However, I think the curtain on the lower part of the shelf looks a bit crazy. Yes, it does not cover the whole width. I intentionally made way for the power strip I’ve got forever on that corner. That’s where I connect my sewing machine and chargers for my phones and batteries. Do you think that missing half curtain looks okay? Or do I need to do something about it?

On the right side, as you can see, I made pockets, where I can stuff my toothbrush, toothpaste, combs, and some hair accessories I use most often. It’s very convenient, even on days when I’m on a rush. However, I originally planned to use those pockets for holding my eyeshadow set (which turned out to be a bit too heavy for the pocket).

Aaaahh!! Looks like something an iron would love to chase! I’ve a secret hidden behind that curtain. I’ll share it with you next time, when it’s quite ready for public viewing. :-)

Because I thought my cheap mirror looked rather out of place with its yucky blue plastic frame, I decided to dress it up a bit. I used the cardboard tubes from the Christmas wrapping papers I used last holidays. It’s quite good as a steady stand (leaning against the wall, however) and leaves a good space below the mirror for the box of lotions and body sprays I often use, which was just perfect.

Yes, I dressed it up with various laces and trimmings… but later, I felt it didn’t go perfectly well with the rest of my ‘dresser’. Oh well, I suppose it will have to do for now. I’ll see how I can improve it later.

As before, my alarm clock rests on half of that wooden board, my proof and souvenir of the first karate-chop I have ever done in my life.

Before you get alarmed with that suspicious insect lurking on my wall, don’t worry. It’s a toy spider, with all its glittering glory. I’m just being cheeky.

So, what do you think of my latest project?

Happy New Year!!!

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

First, I realized I still owe you a report on the “Gifts of Christmas” event… so here it goes…

After a lengthy research, I came up with this idea:

I’m such a lover of cardboard and recycling, so there. These boxes are just dummies, with nothing in them, as they’re meant to be centerpieces, not real presents. :-)

And I also love recycling white paper. But soon, it’s time to wrap the boxes up… and I mean, the real Christmas wrapping begins…

Tah-dah!

Along with the six boxes, I prepared extra baubles, roses, and strings of silver beads, six packs of them too.

Along with the centerpieces, I also prepared the ‘gifts’ in words. At first, I tried printing them in white A4’s, and adding a red glitter film over the text. However, I soon realized the size of the font was not large enough for the hall. With time running out, I resorted to using MS Visio (imagine that!) and creating Christmas version of each letter I need in Jpeg format, then hopped over to Officeworks to have them printed, just as you’d have your normal photos printed. :-)

Here’s how it looked at the hall’s wall…

And now, the ‘gifts’ centerpieces…

I finally decided to have them as gifts, then attach some photos on the sides of each box, showing scenes that depict each ‘gift’ the most.

That one represents ‘Gratitude’. If you’d look closely as the sepia photo on the left of the gift, you’d see that it’s of the tenth leper, who came back to thank Christ for healing them.

This one’s ‘Love’. So many scenes in the scriptures show love and the ones of Christ blessing the children teaching Mary and Martha were two of the four that I’ve chosen for this particular ‘gift.’

Joy! The prodigal son returning and embraced by his father just shows how joyful his father was at his return, eh?

The top of each gift…. Boy, was I glad Lincraft was having a sale when I went shopping! I got these baubles and ribbons for a good bargain. :-)

But of course, I’d also like to show you some of the other decors the other ladies brought for the event. Instead of having a Christmas tree, for example, (which would take a long time to set up and take down – not practical for a 2-3 hour activity) somebody brought this lovely quilt:

Then we also had nativity scenes, and this one just awed me!

I know I’ll never have the patience to finish a project like that, that’s why I appreciate it so much.

How about you? How was your Christmas and did you get any presents ostentatiously wrapped like I did mine? (LOL! Of course, I didn’t wrap the real presents for my family/friends like that… just not practical. :-D)

Hope you all have a happy and safe new year!!!
