Coin Collecting
- by Mareeyah
Many people often engage in various activities that they refer to as hobbies. A hobby is a particular activity that a person finds pleasurable in doing.
Coin collecting then, as a hobby, simply means that a person enjoys collecting various kinds of coins, not necessarily focusing more on the monetary value of the coin. However, when the emphasis of coin collecting is more in the monetary value of the coin than the gratification it brings to the collector, it may no longer be considered as a hobby, but more of an investment.
According to history, the main reason why many generations were into collecting coins was the value that would someday be attained by the coin collection. Anciently, coin collecting was deemed to be a hobby fit for the kings, as ancient coins were so valuable that only the kings had the economic capability of collecting them.
In the present time, coin collection is no longer just for the kings or the wealthy people. Almost anybody can collect coins as a hobby. Coin collecting continues to become more popular as more and more people become engaged in this hobby. So legendary it is now, that it has been nicknamed as the “King of Hobbies.”
Probably one of the thousand reasons why coin collecting is now one of the most popular hobbies worldwide is because coins are so easily accessible. When a person wants to start engaging in this hobby, he can begin absolutely any time, and just about anywhere. Some people start coin collecting just with the coins that their pockets have gathered. This phase of the hobby is called the “accumulator” stage, where collectors try to gather as much coins as they can using the change in their pockets.
In many countries where the design of coins change over the years, a coin collector can have a good collection by collecting coins of the same value but from different years and of different designs. The various shapes of some coins, such as a square-ish type, a flowery type, or a multi-sided polygon type, make a collection truly more interesting and beautiful.
It is when the collector becomes more engrossed in coin collecting that the hobby gradually becomes more pricey. From collecting change coins, to collecting coins of various years, to collecting coins from other countries, whatever the price may be, true hobbyists are always willing to pay for what it’s worth, especially when a specific coin would add beauty and interest to the collection.
