Aloha! So, you’re planning to start an ohana by marrying the man of your dreams and celebrate your wedding with a Hawaiian theme.

Colors:
Tropical colors, red (Hawaii’s state color)

Bridal attire:

Have a wedding gown in any design you want, preferably something very light. Or you can wear a beautiful white muumuu. Or a bridal holoku. For headdress, it’s either a flower behind an ear, a haku lei, or if you want your hair tied in a bun, be sure to pin some fresh tropical flowers around it. For accessories, you can wear native jewelries made of shells or pearls.

Groom’s attire:

Wear white shirt and white pants with a traditional maile lei or a maile-style ti lead lei.

Attendants:

Female attendants can wear colorful muumuus or grass skirts, and wear single strand leis. Male attendants can be in matching tropical shirts and wear ti leaf leis.

Invitations:

Incorporate designs of sea shells, palm trees, or plumerias, even as silhouettes. You may use tropical colors for the envelops.

Reception Ideas:

A luau, of course! Have your reception by the beach, in a giant lawn with lots of palm trees, or by a poolside with waterfalls, with hammocks, a Tiki bar , wooden tables and chairs. Guests can be in tropical attires: floral shirts and dresses. Decorations may include Tiki torches, huge shells, starfishes, glowing paper lanterns, palm trees, colorful parasols, twinkle lights, lots and lots of flowers, especially hibiscus, orchids and plumerias. If by the poolside, you can have floating flower arrangements. Have some hula dancers and even fire dancers for entertainment. You can even have a professional hula instructor present to teach basic lessons to the guests. Instead of numbers for the tables, you can name them after Hawaiian landmarks or islands, attaching a little card of trivia along with it. Centerpieces can be tropical flowers, whole fresh pineapples on tatami mats, beautiful sea shells or a beautiful pineapple palm tree tropical fruit display. Your head table can have some grass table skirting.

Foods:

Roasted pig, tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, banana, kiwi, papaya), taro, fruit or grilled kebabs, iced fruit punch on glasses with cocktail umbrellas, blue lemonade, fruit-flavored shaved ice. Guests may also drink from fresh coconuts, using straws. Foods may be served on banana leaves.

Favors:

Flower leis, cookies or pineapple goodies in little woven baskets, lava-lavas, fancy jewelry made of sea shells

Music :

The Hawaiian Wedding Song. Other music can be provided by an ukulele or a big live Hawaiian band for a more Hawaiian feel.

Other ideas:

Incorporate into the wedding ceremony the Hawaiian tradition of binding of hands of the marrying couple using a maile lei. For the newlyweds’ entrance to the reception area, have someone blow a ‘Pu’ or a conch shell. Check out My Island Party eBook for more fantastic ideas to make your luau the best ever!
